How this ranking works

The ranking above is generated from our MCP servers catalog and reorders itself as engagement changes. Each listing carries a Heat score, a 0 to 100 signal computed from page views, upvotes and saves, with each component log-normalized so new servers with real traction can climb quickly. There is no editorial hand on the scale and no paid hand either: tiers and sponsorships on this site are labeled and live outside ranked lists. Every server is also reviewed by a human before it is published, which matters in a space where auto-indexed registries carry tens of thousands of thin wrapper servers. The full standings live on the leaderboard.

How to evaluate an MCP server

An MCP server runs inside your agent's trust boundary, so picking one is closer to adding a dependency than bookmarking a website. Concrete things to check:

  • Tool quality over tool count. Read the actual tool definitions. A server with five well-described tools that map to real tasks beats one that dumps forty thin endpoints into your agent's context window.
  • Credentials and permissions. What API keys does it need, what scopes, and where are they stored? Prefer servers that ask for the narrowest access that does the job.
  • Transport and hosting. A local stdio server keeps data on your machine; a remote server is easier to set up but routes your requests through someone else's infrastructure. Know which one you are installing.
  • Maintenance. The MCP spec is still evolving. Check recent commits and whether the server tracks current protocol revisions.
  • Client compatibility. Confirm it works with your client, whether that is Claude Desktop, Claude Code, an IDE or your own agent runtime.
